While social media plays an important role in customer engagement, it does not eliminate the need to proactively interact directly with customers in other ways.

You have minimal control over who sees social media posts. You can invite people to follow you but you cannot truly target your audience. Public posts may or may not be seen by your most valued customers and prospects. An impressive recent project story you share may receive likes, but when you look closer, those likes may not be coming from key customers and prospects. You will benefit from supplementing your social media efforts with a plan to reach out directly to key people who have the potential to boost your bottom line.

This is not to say you shouldn't be posting on social media. Having active, current accounts shows customers and prospects you are a legitimate organization that values interaction, and it offers another way to communicate, share, and advertise.

A well-balanced customer engagement plan includes social media as well as various other methods of connecting such as targeted emails, phone calls, newsletters and blog posts. Identify the people who have been your most valued customers, or who the potential to be on that list, and prioritize staying in touch with them in a variety of ways.

Reach out regularly and proactively to this group of people with quality content that brings them value, and you will reap many benefits. Your efforts will allow you to share capabilities, inspire ideas, enhance your brand, strengthen relationships, and stay top-of-mind.
